In regards to the Catholic church:
Why is anyone SURPRISED by this? Pedophiles have known for centuries that the Catholic church will not only shelter them but feed their addictions. It's like it's some big shock or something. You -really- expected them to behave morally, simply because they're the ones in charge of telling YOU what morals you should have? Come on, the Jesus freaks have always thought themselves above the laws they want to set for each other. After all, the Magna Carta is a POLITICAL document, and even though the king isn't above the law it doesn't say a damned thing about the religious lunatics. But they, too, should be subject to the laws. (Especially since they have no real authority EXCEPT a moral one, and if you have nothing but morals to preach you'd better practice what you preach. When Jesus said, 'suffer the little children, come unto me', THAT'S NOT WHAT HE MEANT.)
But I'm sure it didn't START that way on purpose. I'm sure, back in the day, those vows of celibacy just wore them down and that a lot of priests were just men tempted into terrible, terrible things. But when the Church saw that and rather than say, Gee, we'd better just let the priests screw some women, they just shoveled it under the rug, and it got worse and worse and worse. And then, in their secret little behind-the-scenes world, it became acceptable behavior. And true perverts have a sense for one another; they found the place they could lie in wait to victimize children and took advantage of it. Because I would much rather believe that there's a bunch of pedophiles pretending to be priests to rape children, than they're all real priests with a heartfelt dedication to God, who all seem to think raping children is okay. (You know why priests have to be celibate? Cos way back when, when priests actually collected tithes for their villages and took it to the larger churches, they were afraid that the priests would take "God's" money for their families. In other words, they realized that a man with a wife and children would be first and foremost dedicated to them, and that only by having no greater Earthly attachments could one be trusted to serve God properly. Primitive, but practical.)
And what's all this shock about the Pope being involved? Duh, he was a priest too, I'm sure there are boys HE raped back in the day. Something THIS vast in the church, that everyone clearly knew about even if they didn't participate... I'd lay money he's just as bad as the rest of them. Man is flawed, even a man who's supposedly the word of God on Earth. Did it ever occur to anyone that they've been fleeced? Seriously. Then again, these are the people who literally believe the world was created in seven days and that women were fashioned from a rib bone (and then that we're all descended of two people, and therefore extremely incestuous), so I suppose I have to give them a lot of room for gullibility.
